How to measure your truck bed

The chart gives the factory length, but the only way to be certain is to measure — covers fit the real bed, and two of the same truck can differ by cab.

  1. 1

Close the tailgate. Measure the bed as it will be used — with the tailgate shut and latched, since that is the length a tonneau cover has to span.

  2. 2

Start at the bulkhead. Lay a tape measure flat on the bed floor, pushed up against the bulkhead — the wall behind the cab.

  3. 3

Measure to the closed tailgate. Run the tape straight back along the floor to the inside face of the closed tailgate, and read the number in inches.

  4. 4

Round to a bed category. Match that figure to the nearest standard category — 5.5 ft, 6.5 ft or 8 ft — because that is how covers are sold. A reading of 67 inches is a 5.5 ft bed, not a 6 ft one.

Two numbers people mix up: bed length is the floor, measured inside; box length in a brochure is sometimes the outside of the sheet metal and reads two to three inches longer. Cover makers use the inside floor figure, which is what this tool returns.

Truck bed sizes — frequently asked

How do I find my truck's bed length?

Pick your make, model and year above and this tool returns the exact bed length in inches. Bed length is measured inside the bed, from the bulkhead behind the cab to the inside of the closed tailgate. The same truck and year can have different beds depending on cab, so confirm with a tape measure before buying a cover.

What are the common truck bed sizes?

Most pickups are sold in three bed-length categories: a 5.5 ft bed (about 5'5"–5'9"), a 6.5 ft bed (about 6'–7') and an 8 ft bed (about 8'). Mid-size and unibody trucks add shorter, compact beds under 5.5 ft. Tonneau covers are sold by these categories.

Is the bed size the same as the bed length in inches?

Not exactly. "5.5 ft" is a category name — the real measured length is usually a bit different (a "5.5 ft" bed is often around 67 inches, not 66). Covers fit to the real bed, so use the inch figure in the chart, and measure your own bed to be sure.

Which trucks have a 6.5 ft bed?

Most full-size pickups offer a 6.5 ft (standard) bed — including the Ford F-150, Chevy Silverado, GMC Sierra, Ram 1500, Toyota Tundra and Nissan Titan. Use the reverse lookup above to see every model that offers each bed size.

Why does my truck show more than one bed length?

Because that model is sold with different beds depending on cab. A crew cab usually pairs with a shorter bed, a regular or extended cab with a longer one. Select your year for the exact set, then measure to confirm which one you have.

Which trucks have a 5.5 ft bed?

The 5.5 ft bed is the short box on full-size crew cabs — Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, GMC Sierra 1500, Ram 1500, Toyota Tundra and Nissan Titan all offer one, and the Ford F-150 Lightning and Rivian R1T are 5.5 ft only. It measures roughly 67 inches inside, not 66. Use the reverse lookup above for the full list with exact inches.

Which trucks have an 8 ft bed?

The 8 ft long box is a full-size-only option and is getting rarer. It is offered on the Ford F-150 and F-250/F-350 Super Duty, Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra (1500 through 3500HD), and Ram 1500 through 3500 — usually paired with a regular or extended cab. No mid-size pickup has ever offered one.

What bed length do I need for a 4×8 sheet of plywood?

A 4×8 sheet needs 96 inches of floor to lie flat with the tailgate closed, which in practice means an 8 ft bed. A 6.5 ft bed (about 78 inches) carries it with the tailgate down and a strap; a 5.5 ft bed leaves roughly two feet hanging out and needs a bed extender and a flag. Width matters too — the sheet is 48 inches, so it only sits on the floor if the wheel wells are more than 48 inches apart, otherwise it rides on top of the arches.

Does bed length affect which tonneau cover I buy?

It decides it. Covers are made per bed length and per generation, so a 6.5 ft cover will not fit a 5.5 ft bed even on the same truck and year. Get the inch figure from the chart, confirm it with a tape measure, then order to that bed category.

Is a longer bed worth it?

If you regularly haul sheet goods, lumber, a dirt bike or a slide-in camper, yes — the extra 18 to 30 inches is the difference between the tailgate closing and not. If the truck is a daily driver that occasionally carries luggage and yard waste, the short bed parks and turns far better and gives up very little. Payload is set by the truck, not the bed, so a longer bed does not mean it can carry more weight.
