How We Test

Every recommendation on this site comes out of the same five-stage process. It takes weeks per cover. It’s the reason our rankings are different from everyone else’s.

Stage 01 — Out-of-box install timing

Stopwatch, two installers, photos at every step. We record total install time, the number of tools required, whether drilling is needed, and any step the manufacturer’s instructions gets wrong. Anything over 90 minutes for a soft cover or 2 hours for a hard cover loses points.

Stage 02 — Static water-pour test

We rig a rain bar across the truck bed and pump water at 60 psi for 5 minutes. Then we open the cover and inspect the bed for pooling. We test in two orientations: level, and 5° rearward tilt (simulating a parked-on-incline scenario).

Score weight: 25% · Pressure 60 psi · Duration 5 minutes · Tilt scenarios 0° and 5°.

Stage 03 — Highway aero-drag check

We run a 30-mile loop at 65 mph on cruise control, three times uncovered, three times covered. We record OBD-II fuel-consumption data and average the deltas. Hard, low-profile covers consistently show 3–8% MPG gains; soft, raised covers show 1–4%.

Stage 04 — UV chamber 500-hour finish stability

A 1-foot panel sample goes into a QUV-style accelerated weather chamber for 500 hours of UV-A 340 nm exposure (≈ 5 years of Arizona sunlight). We measure gloss change, color shift (ΔE*), and surface microcracking. The good aluminum covers shrug it off; the budget vinyls show measurable fade.

Stage 05 — 4-season ownership log

The cover stays on a real, daily-driven pickup for at least one full year — through summer heat, winter salt, spring rain, and fall debris. We log every issue: seal degradation, latch wear, hinge fatigue, lock action, color fade, and snow-load behavior. This is the section that catches problems no short-term review ever sees.

Score weight: 40% · Minimum 12 months · ≥10,000 miles · Every issue logged.

The final score

Each stage produces a 0–10 score weighted as shown above. We sum the weighted scores into a final 0–10 editor rating. Anything below 7.5 doesn’t make the recommended list, regardless of brand. Anything above 9.0 is automatically considered for our “best overall” pick of the year.

When we revise a review, the test date is updated at the top of the page. When a cover drops below our threshold after long-term use, we say so — and we move it off the recommended list.
