Buyer's Guide 10 min read
Most Tundra owners are shopping for the wrong cover because they never checked their bed length first. Pick the bed, then the cover. We tested seven on the 2022+ platform so you don’t have to guess.
You bought a Tundra because it does everything, and now you want the bed sealed so your gear stops getting soaked at the job site or rattling loose on the highway. Open any search result and you get the same five covers ranked the same way, with no mention of the one thing that decides fitment on this truck: your bed is probably 5.5 ft, and that changes which covers even bolt on cleanly.
The 2022 redesign reset the platform. New frame, new bed, new rail setup. A lot of “Tundra fitment” charts online still reference the old 2007–2021 truck, so an owner orders a cover that lists “Tundra” and finds the clamps don’t line up. We sorted that out below. Every pick here is confirmed against the current-generation bed, bought with our own money, not gifted.
For most Tundra owners, a hard folding cover is the right buy. On our 5.5 ft CrewMax, the BAKFlip MX4 sealed the bed, locked solid, and folded out of the way in under a minute. It’s the cover we’d spend our own money on. Want maximum security and a flush look, and don’t mind paying premium? The Retrax PRO MX retractable is the upgrade. On a tight budget? The TruXedo TruXport soft roll-up does the basics without drama.
The Tundra’s quirk is bed length tied to cab, plus a 2022 redesign that broke older fitment charts. Most Tundras sold are CrewMax with a 5.5 ft bed. Double Cab gets the 6.5 ft bed. The 8.1 ft long bed exists but is rare. Get your bed length wrong and the cover won’t seal, full stop.
The third-generation Tundra launched for 2022 with the twin-turbo V6 and the iForce MAX hybrid. That redesign changed the frame and bed structure, so a cover built for a 2007–2021 Tundra is not a safe bet on a 2022+ truck. Good news: the iForce MAX hybrid uses the same bed dimensions as the gas truck, so the hybrid battery doesn’t change your cover choice. When a listing says “Tundra,” check that it specifies 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025, or 2026 fitment before you order.
Cab choice locks your bed length on this truck, so it’s the first number to nail down.
| Cab | Bed length | How common | Cover notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| CrewMax | 5.5 ft | Most Tundras | Same short-bed footprint as an F-150 SuperCrew; widest cover support |
| Double Cab | 6.5 ft | Common | Plenty of options, but always filter for 6.5 ft |
| CrewMax / Double Cab | 8.1 ft (long bed) | Rare | Fewer SKUs; confirm long-bed fitment specifically |
Here’s the useful part most guides skip: the 5.5 ft Tundra CrewMax bed shares the short-bed class with the F-150 SuperCrew. The clamps and dimensions aren’t identical, but the cover families are the same, so if a brand makes a cover for short-bed F-150s, it almost always offers a Tundra-specific version too. That’s why your shortlist looks a lot like our best tonneau cover for F-150 list.
The Tundra’s factory bed has a rail and cleat system along the top edge for tie-downs. Most clamp-on covers mount fine around it, but some tri-folds and roll-ups sit higher or lower depending on whether you keep the OEM rail caps installed. A few covers ask you to remove or relocate cleats for a clean seal. None of this is a dealbreaker, but it’s the kind of detail that turns a 30-minute install into an afternoon if you don’t read the instructions first. Check whether your chosen cover clamps under the rail or mounts on top before you buy.
One pick per cover type, ranked by how each performed on our 5.5 ft CrewMax. Each comes out of the same five-stage process we run on every cover: fitment, weather seal, security, daily use, and a teardown after months of road time. See how we test.
The MX4 is the cover we’d buy with our own money for a Tundra. Matte aluminum panels that shrug off rain and curious hands, and they fold flat against the cab when you need the full bed. On our 5.5 ft CrewMax it passed our 60 psi, 5-minute water test with a dry bed underneath, and the clamps bit hard onto the factory rail without fuss.

If you want the bed to disappear under a flush aluminum deck and lock at any position, the PRO MX is the upgrade. It rolls into a canister at the bulkhead, so there’s nothing to store and no panels flapping at highway speed. Premium pricing, but on our security stage it was the hardest cover to defeat without tools.
The Sentry CT splits the difference: a hard vinyl-over-aluminum cover that rolls up instead of folding. It locks better than a soft roll-up and stows tighter than a tri-fold, which suits a Tundra owner who loads tall gear often but still wants weather and theft protection. It sat clean over the factory rail on our test truck.
The TruXport is the honest budget answer for a Tundra. Soft vinyl over bows, tension-mounted, and quick to roll forward when you need the whole bed. It won’t stop a determined thief, but for a daily-driven CrewMax that mostly needs weather protection and a cleaner look, it does the job for the least money.
For owners who want soft-cover pricing with cleaner folding than a roll-up, the Trifecta 2.0 is the value pick. It folds in thirds toward the cab, so you get partial or full bed access without rolling and re-tensioning every time. On our 5.5 ft Tundra it installed clamp-on with no rail modification.
Your use case picks the cover before the brand does. Match your situation to a row and you’re done. Confirm bed length first, then buy the type below.
| If you… | Buy this type | Our pick |
|---|---|---|
| Want one cover that does everything well | Hard folding | BAKFlip MX4 |
| Park in cities or leave tools in the bed | Retractable | Retrax PRO MX |
| Haul tall gear but still want security | Hard roll-up | TruXedo Sentry CT |
| Mostly need weather cover for the least money | Soft roll-up | TruXedo TruXport |
| Want value with quick partial access | Soft tri-fold | Extang Trifecta 2.0 |
Still torn between hard and soft? Our breakdown on hard vs soft tonneau covers walks through the trade-off with our test data.
Most Tundras are CrewMax with a 5.5 ft bed. Double Cab trucks get the 6.5 ft bed, and a rare long-bed configuration runs 8.1 ft. Cab style locks bed length on this truck, so if you have CrewMax, you almost certainly have the 5.5 ft short bed. Measure floor to tailgate inside the bed if you’re unsure before ordering any cover.
Not reliably. The 2022 third-generation redesign changed the frame and bed structure, so covers listed for 2007–2021 Tundras can fail to clamp or seal on the new truck. Always confirm the listing specifies 2022 through 2026 fitment for your bed length. A cover that just says “Tundra” without a year range is a gamble.
No. The iForce MAX hybrid uses the same bed dimensions as the gas-only Tundra, so the hybrid battery and powertrain don’t affect cover fitment. Choose your cover by bed length and cab, the same as any other 2022+ Tundra. The hybrid doesn’t add any clearance or mounting differences in the bed.
Yes, most clamp-on covers mount around the Tundra’s factory rail and cleats. Some tri-folds and roll-ups sit at a different height depending on whether you keep the OEM rail caps, and a few ask you to relocate cleats for a clean seal. Check whether your cover mounts over or under the rail before you buy so install stays a 30-minute job.
A little. Independent aero testing on pickups generally shows small single-digit MPG changes from a sealed bed, not the double-digit miracle some ads imply. On a thirsty truck like the Tundra, treat any fuel savings as a bonus, not the reason to buy. Buy the cover for weather protection, security, and a cleaner look first.
Sometimes, but not with most flush covers. Retractable and hard folding covers usually can’t run alongside a full bed rack without a special low-profile rack system. If you want both, plan the combo before buying either, since the cover and rack have to be designed to share the rail. Confirm compatibility for your exact rack model.
For most daily drivers, a hard folding cover like the BAKFlip MX4 is the better long-term buy: more security, better weather seal, and it still folds out of the way. Go soft only if budget is tight and you mainly need weather protection. If you leave anything valuable in the bed, the security gap between hard and soft is real.
For the typical 2022+ Tundra owner on a 5.5 ft CrewMax, the BAKFlip MX4 is the cover we’d buy with our own money: it seals, locks, and folds away without compromise. Step up to the Retrax PRO MX if security and a flush deck are worth the premium. Drop to the TruXedo TruXport if you need the basics for the least money. Whatever you pick, confirm your bed length first and that the listing covers 2022 to 2026 fitment. Get those two right and the cover follows.
