How do I calculate the fuel cost of a trip?
Divide the trip distance by your vehicle's MPG to get the gallons you'll burn, then multiply by the price per gallon: (miles ÷ MPG) × price = cost. For a round trip, double the distance first. This calculator does it live and also splits the cost between passengers and projects a commute.
How much does it cost to drive 100 miles?
It depends on your MPG and fuel price. At 18 MPG and $3.50/gal, 100 miles burns about 5.6 gallons and costs roughly $19.40. A thirstier truck at 14 MPG would be about $25, while a 25-MPG vehicle would be around $14. Enter your own numbers above for an exact figure.
How much more does towing cost in fuel?
A lot — towing can cut a truck's MPG by a third or more. If your truck does 20 MPG solo but 12 MPG with a trailer, a 300-mile trip jumps from about $52 to roughly $87 at $3.50/gal — over $35 extra each way. Use the compare tool above to see the gap for your own numbers.
How do I split gas money fairly on a road trip?
Work out the total fuel cost for the trip, then divide by the number of people sharing it (including the driver). Enter the headcount above and the calculator shows the per-person share. For long trips, splitting by who rode which legs is fairer than a flat split.
Does a tonneau cover lower my fuel cost?
