How to measure a bolt pattern
Worth doing even when you have the chart — a previous owner may have fitted adapters, and a swapped axle changes everything.

Count the lugs
The first number in a bolt pattern is simply how many studs the hub has — five, six or eight on a pickup. Count them before you measure anything.

Measure across on an even-lug hub
On a four, six or eight lug hub the studs sit directly opposite each other. Measure centre-to-centre across the hub between two studs facing each other. That distance is the bolt circle.

Skip a stud on a five-lug hub
Five studs never sit opposite each other. Measure from the centre of one stud to the outside edge of the stud two positions away — that shortcut gives you the bolt circle directly.

Match it to a standard size
Bolt circles come in a short list of standard sizes. If you measure 139.5 mm you have a 139.7 mm (5.5 inch) pattern — round to the nearest standard rather than trusting the tape to a tenth of a millimetre.

What is a bolt pattern on a truck?
A bolt pattern, also called a lug pattern or PCD, describes the circle the wheel studs sit on. It is written as two numbers: the count of studs, then the diameter of that circle. A 6x139.7 pattern means six studs on a 139.7 mm circle, which is the same as 6x5.5 inches. Both numbers have to match your hub before a wheel will bolt on at all.
How do I find my truck's bolt pattern?
Pick your make, model and year in the tool above and it returns the pattern along with hub bore, stud thread and lug torque. To confirm it on the truck, count the studs and measure the bolt circle — on an even number of lugs, measure centre to centre between two opposite studs; on a five-lug hub, measure from the centre of one stud to the far edge of the stud two positions round.
Will any wheel with the right bolt pattern fit my truck?
No, and this is the single most common wheel-buying mistake. The bolt pattern only gets the wheel onto the studs. Three more things have to work: the hub bore has to clear the hub (a smaller bore will not seat at all), the offset has to keep the tire clear of the fender and the suspension, and the load rating has to cover your truck's axle weight. A wheel that bolts on can still rub, sit off-centre or be unsafe.
What is hub bore and does it matter?
Hub bore is the diameter of the hole in the centre of the wheel that sits over the hub. On a factory wheel the hole matches the hub exactly and the hub carries the weight — that is called hub-centric. Aftermarket wheels are often made with a larger bore to fit several vehicles, and then need centring rings to sit true. Too large a bore without rings causes vibration; too small a bore simply will not go on.
Is 6x139.7 the same as 6x5.5?
Yes — they are the same pattern written in different units. 139.7 mm is exactly 5.5 inches, so 6x139.7 and 6x5.5" describe an identical hub. The same goes for 8x165.1 and 8x6.5", 5x127 and 5x5", and 6x135 and 6x5.31". Manufacturers use whichever convention suits their market, which is why the same wheel is often advertised both ways.
Can I use wheel adapters to change bolt pattern?
Adapters exist and they work, but they push the wheel outward by their own thickness, add a second set of fasteners to torque and inspect, and move the wheel load further from the hub bearing. On a truck that tows or carries weight, a wheel in the correct pattern is always the better answer. If you do run adapters, buy hub-centric ones, torque them properly and re-check after the first fifty miles.
What torque should truck lug nuts be?
It varies by truck, typically 80 to 100 lb-ft on a mid-size pickup and 130 to 165 lb-ft on a full-size or heavy duty. The figures in this tool are the commonly published values for each generation, but your owner's manual is the authority — always tighten in a star pattern, in stages, with a torque wrench, and re-check after 50 to 100 miles on newly fitted wheels.
Do all trucks from the same brand share a bolt pattern?
No. Ford alone uses four different patterns across its pickups — 5x135 on the old F-150, 6x135 on the current one, 8x170 on Super Duty and 5x108 on the Maverick. GM changed its heavy duties from 8x165.1 to 8x180 for 2011, and Ram went from five lugs to six for the 2019 1500 while still selling the five-lug truck alongside it. Always check by year, not by badge.
