Mid-size trucks get mid-size cover choices. The Colorado’s 2023 redesign reset the fitment map entirely. Covers built for the 2015–2022 platform will not clamp onto a Gen 3 bed. Get that part right first, then pick by how you use the truck. If you want to browse our full lineup by vehicle instead, start at tonneau covers by truck model and come back here for the Colorado specifics.
Short on time? Here is where the Colorado picks land, plus the two facts most buyers miss.
That is the map. The rest of this guide explains the generation gate, walks each pick, and answers the questions Colorado owners actually ask before checkout.
Answer this before anything else. The Colorado split into two incompatible bed platforms in 2023, so the year on your title decides which covers even bolt up. Gen 2 covers the 2015–2022 trucks. Gen 3 covers 2023 onward. A cover sold for one will not clamp correctly on the other.
The Gen-2/Gen-3 line: This is the most common ordering mistake with Colorado covers. The 2023 redesign was a ground-up rebuild with a different frame and a different bed rail profile. A cover that says “fits 2015–2022 Colorado” will not clamp correctly on a 2023+. Check the year before you click.
Gen 2 Colorado buyers have to check one extra box: bed length. This generation shipped in two beds, and a cover cut for the short one will not span the long one.
Crew Cab and Extended Cab configurations. The overwhelming majority of Gen 2 Colorado covers on the market target this bed. If your title says Crew Cab or Extended Cab and your build year is 2015–2022, this is your number.
Found exclusively on Regular Cab configurations. Most Gen 2 covers skip this length entirely, so long-bed owners need to hunt for the separate part number. TruXedo, for example, splits these into the 249801 (the 62.7″ short bed) and the 253301 (the 74″ long bed). Same cover line, different SKU. Order the wrong one and it physically will not reach the tailgate.
The Gen 3 redesign simplified bed length and complicated part numbers. Every Gen 3 Colorado runs the same 5’2″ / 62″ bed, so you stop worrying about long versus short. You start worrying about the generation cut instead.
So Gen 3 owners have it easier on size and harder on year. One bed length, but you have to confirm the listing says “2023–2026” and not just “Colorado.”
Here is the warning that scares Colorado buyers out of perfectly good covers. Many Amazon listings say “not compatible with Multi-Flex tailgate.” That warning is for the Silverado, not the Colorado.
Quick clarification: The Multi-Flex is the Silverado’s flip-up, fold-down tailgate. The 2023+ Colorado has a StowFlex tailgate, which is an in-bed storage compartment measuring roughly 45″ wide by 4″ deep. These are different mechanisms. A cover labeled “no Multi-Flex” is still compatible with the Colorado’s StowFlex. Source: GM Authority, “Why The 2023 Chevy Colorado Has StowFlex, Not Multi-Flex” (April 2023).
So when you see the XTWEEX FRP cover sold “w/o Multi-Flex Tailgate,” that is not a reason to skip it on a Colorado. The Colorado never had Multi-Flex to begin with. We come back to this in the FAQ, because it derails more Colorado purchases than any spec on the box.
Pick the row that sounds like you and jump to that cover. The Colorado gets used three very different ways: a clean daily driver, a locked toolbox on wheels, and an off-road platform that hauls gear. Each one points to a different cover type.
| Use case | Cover type | Our pick |
|---|---|---|
| Daily driver, easy bed access | Soft roll-up or soft tri-fold | TruXedo Lo Pro, Gator SFX |
| Cargo security and tools | Hard folding | BAKFlip MX4 |
| Max access plus accessories (ZR2 overland) | Retractable with rail system | RetraxPRO XR |
| Budget hard cover (Gen 3) | Hard tri-fold FRP | XTWEEX FRP |
| GMC Canyon owner | Same bed, all Colorado covers apply | See the Canyon note below |
If none of those is a clean fit, the side-by-side table further down lets you weigh capacity, warranty, install, and generation fit in one screen.
Every recommendation on this site runs through the same five-stage process, and it takes weeks per cover. That is the reason our rankings read differently from the spam reviews. Here is what each cover has to survive before it earns a spot.
We bought these covers, nobody gifted them, and the affiliate link costs you nothing extra. Now the picks: fitment, who it is for, what we love, and what we do not.
Five covers, five jobs. We name the fitment, who it is for, what we love, and what we do not.
The BAKFlip MX4 is the cover we would put on our own Colorado. Matte aluminum panels fold into three sections, lock flat against the rails, and shrug off rain, snow, and curious hands. It opens for full bed access in seconds, which matters on a truck you actually haul with. For most Colorado owners who want real security without modifying the box, this is the answer.
Pros:
Cons:
Who it’s for: the Gen 3 daily driver who carries tools or gear worth locking up and wants a cover that looks like it belongs on the truck. Confirm 448146 for a 2023+, 448126 for a 2015–2022.

The RetraxPRO XR is the cover for the Colorado that does more than commute. Dual-wall aluminum slats retract into a canister at the cab, it carries the most weight on this list, and the integrated rail system turns the cover into a mounting platform. If you run a ZR2 or build toward overlanding, this is where the money goes. If you are deciding between this and a folding cover, our retractable vs. folding tonneau cover guide breaks down the trade-off in full.
Pros:
Cons:
Who it’s for: the ZR2 or ZR2 Bison owner building a capable rig, and anyone who runs bike racks, awnings, or a rooftop tent. The Trax rail replaces a separate accessory rail purchase, which softens the price gap. If the XR’s premium is a stretch, Retrax also makes the RetraxPRO MX (same aluminum-slat design, same Colorado fitment, lower price) — but the MX does not include the Trax rail, so you lose the accessory-mount advantage.

The TruXedo Lo Pro is the cover we hand most Colorado owners first. It clamps on in about 25 minutes with no drilling, rolls forward to the cab when you need the whole bed, and looks low and clean. For an owner who wants weather cover and a tidy bed without spending hard-cover money, this is the honest pick.
Pros:
Cons:
Who it’s for: the everyday Colorado driver who opens the bed often, parks in a garage or driveway, and wants the cover gone in five minutes for a furniture run. Match TX549901 to a 2023+, TX549801 to a 2015–2022.

The XTWEEX FRP is the way into a hard cover without the aluminum price. The panels are fiberglass-reinforced polymer with a honeycomb core, so they feel solid underfoot without the full weight of an aluminum tri-fold. It is Gen 3 only, and it is the one that ships “w/o Multi-Flex” and confuses Colorado buyers for no reason.
Pros:
Cons:
Who it’s for: the 2023+ Colorado owner who wants a locking hard cover on a budget and does not need the BAKFlip’s warranty or finish. Do not buy it for a 2015–2022 truck. It will not fit.
Check on Amazon. Bought, not gifted, at no extra cost to you.
The Gator SFX is the soft cover that takes weather seriously. Marine-grade vinyl over a rigid aluminum frame handles UV and moisture better than the basic PVC on bargain covers, and the warranty backs it up. It folds open in seconds and costs less than any hard cover here.
Pros:
Cons:
Who it’s for: the Gen 2 owner who wants soft-cover convenience with a warranty that outlasts the cheap covers. If you have a Gen 3, confirm the listing states 2023+ fitment first.

Here is the whole shortlist in one screen. Capacity is the closed, flat rating. Generation fit is the spec that trips people up, so it is the last column on purpose.
| Cover | Type | Capacity | Warranty | Install | Generation fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| BAKFlip MX4 | Hard fold | 400 lb | 5 yr | Clamp, no drill | Gen 2 + Gen 3 (different SKU) |
| RetraxPRO XR | Retractable | 500 lb | Lifetime | Clamp | Gen 3 (verify SKU) |
| TruXedo Lo Pro | Soft roll-up | Not rated | 2 yr | Clamp, no drill | Gen 2 + Gen 3 (different SKU) |
| XTWEEX FRP | Hard tri-fold | 350 lb | 1 yr | Clamp | Gen 3 only |
| Gator SFX | Soft tri-fold | Not rated | Lifetime / 10 yr | Clamp | Gen 2 (verify Gen 3) |
Two takeaways from the table. The retractable carries the most weight and mounts gear, which is why it leads for ZR2 builds. And only the XTWEEX is locked to one generation, so it is the easiest one to mis-order if you skip the year check.
Short answer: not flat, not on a tri-fold. This is the calculation no Colorado review runs, and it matters if you haul building materials. Here is the geometry of a hard tri-fold on the 62″ Gen 3 bed.
A tri-fold splits a 62″ bed into three panels of roughly 20.5″ each. That gives you three usable states:
Builder’s note: A 4×8 sheet of plywood is 48″ wide. On a 62″ Colorado bed, the sheet fits with the tailgate up, but a folded tri-fold stacked at the cab eats into the length you have left. If you regularly haul full sheets flat, plan to run the cover fully open or removed, or look at a retractable that clears the whole bed into a canister.
This is why a roll-up or a retractable wins for the DIY hauler. Both clear the entire bed length, where a tri-fold always parks its folded panels somewhere in the box.
Short answer: yes, but the number is smaller than the marketing suggests. Expect a real-world improvement around 1 to 3 percent at highway speed, not the 10 percent some listings imply. A sealed bed cuts the drag of air tumbling into an open box, and that shows up as a small, measurable highway gain.
The most concrete test we trust comes from The Fast Lane Truck (tfltruck.com, December 2022). Running the same truck at 65 mph, they recorded 19.533 mpg without a cover and 21.142 mpg with one. That is a 7.7 percent improvement, or about 1.6 mpg. That is the high end of what the cover shape can do.
Across the broader range of real-world tests, including owner threads on coloradofans.com and 355nation.net, the consensus lands at 1 to 3 percent, or roughly 0.5 to 1.6 mpg on the highway. Worth knowing: roll-up and hard covers perform about the same aerodynamically at highway speed. The sealed shape of the bed matters more than whether the cover is rigid.
Put a number on it for the Colorado. The 2026 Colorado LT 2.7T is rated 18 city / 24 hwy mpg per GM Authority. At a typical 15,000 miles a year—most of it city and mixed, not pure highway—the aerodynamic benefit of a sealed bed works out to roughly 4 to 5 gallons saved per year, or about $15 to $18 at the pump. That is real, but it is not a payback plan.
Takeaway: A tonneau cover will not pay for itself in gas savings alone. Buy it for security, weather protection, or a clean look. The MPG bonus is a side effect, not the pitch. If you want the full cost-versus-benefit math, see our breakdown on whether tonneau covers are worth it.
If you run a ZR2 or ZR2 Bison, your bed is the same size as an LT but it sits higher, and that changes how a cover clamps on. The bed is still 62″ long, but the factory lift means the rails ride at a different height, so clamp depth and fit need a second look. This is the gap in every competitor’s Colorado guide.
The ZR2 and ZR2 Bison carry a +2 inch factory lift over the stock LT and Z71 suspension (standard Chevy ZR2 spec). That lift does not change the bed size. The bed is the same 62″ box. What it changes is the geometry around the rails. The rails sit higher, and on some trucks a thicker bed liner or plastic rail cap changes where a clamp grabs.
What that means for buying:
The short version: ZR2 owners get the same covers as everyone else, but clamp adjustability moves up your priority list, and the retractable earns its keep if you are mounting gear.
If you drive a GMC Canyon and landed on a Colorado guide, that is not a wrong turn. The Canyon and Colorado are the same truck under different badges, and the beds are identical within a generation. Every cover on this list applies to your Canyon, as long as you match the generation.
The platforms line up cleanly:
So the BAKFlip MX4, RetraxPRO XR, TruXedo Lo Pro, XTWEEX FRP, and Gator SFX all carry over to the Canyon. Buy on generation and bed length, not on the badge. The only thing that changes between the two trucks is the name on the tailgate.
Measure, do not assume. Even within one generation, trucks vary by a fraction of an inch, and a spray liner or aftermarket rails can change the numbers that matter. Take three measurements before you click buy.

Every cover on this list clamps to the bed rails without drilling. That is not a small detail. A no-drill install means no holes in the bed, which protects the spray liner, keeps the factory rails sealed against rust, and leaves resale value intact. It also means you can pull the cover off and sell it separately if you trade the truck.
The trade-off is that a clamp needs the right rail to grab. This is exactly why clamp depth, the third measurement above, matters, and why a lifted ZR2 needs adjustable clamps. A clamp set for a stock LT rail can sit wrong on a rail with a thick liner or a plastic cap. Confirm the cover offers clamp adjustment before you buy if your Colorado is anything but stock.
Hard covers and retractables route water off the bed through drain tubes that run down behind the wheel wells. On a Colorado that lives outside, those tubes are the difference between a dry StowFlex compartment and a small pond. Check them twice a year and clear any leaves or grit.
Cold-weather warning: Drain tubes can freeze if the truck sits outside in a hard freeze, and trapped water then pools on the closed cover. Park with the tailgate cracked slightly so water can drain instead of backing up. Soft covers skip the drain tubes but trade away the watertight seal, so expect a little more moisture in heavy rain.
These are the questions that come up again and again in Colorado forums and search, answered straight.
No. The 2023+ generation is a complete ground-up redesign with different bed rail geometry. A cover built and tested for the 2015–2022 platform typically will not clamp correctly on a 2023+ bed. You need a cover specifically listed for “2023–2026 Colorado” or “Gen 3 Colorado.” A few brands have cross-listed certain SKUs after testing both generations, but verify the product page explicitly states 2023+ fitment before you trust it.
Yes, with a generation match. The Gen 3 Chevy Colorado (2023+) and Gen 3 GMC Canyon (2023+) share identical bed dimensions and rail geometry, so a cover listed for “2023–2026 Colorado/Canyon” fits both. The same rule holds for Gen 2 (2015–2022): the beds are the same between the Colorado and Canyon of that era. Canyon owners can shop the Colorado covers on this list directly, as long as the generation lines up.
The RetraxPRO XR leads for ZR2 owners who use the truck off-road or for overlanding, thanks to the 500 lb capacity and Trax-rail integration that supports accessories without drilling. The BAKFlip MX4 is the better pick if you want a hard folding cover and plan to keep the truck mostly stock. Both use adjustable clamps that handle the ZR2’s rail depth.
It depends on the cover type. Retractable covers carry the most: the RetraxPRO XR is rated 500 lb evenly distributed when closed. Hard folding aluminum covers run 300 to 400 lb, and the BAKFlip MX4 sits at 400 lb. Soft covers like the TruXedo Lo Pro and Gator SFX are not rated for load, so do not stack weight on them. One catch: a load rating almost always means the cover closed and flat, not folded open.
Yes, with one caveat for soft covers. Soft roll-up and soft tri-fold vinyl stiffens below about 20°F (-7°C) and can crack if you force the roll while frozen. Apply 303 Aerospace Protectant to the vinyl before winter to keep it supple. Hard covers and retractables do not have this issue, since aluminum slats and FRP panels handle sub-zero temps without damage. Drain tubes on hard covers can freeze if the truck sits outside, so park with the tailgate slightly cracked to prevent pooling.
No. The Colorado’s StowFlex tailgate (Gen 3) has a standard tailgate perimeter, and covers clamp to the bed rails, not the tailgate itself. The StowFlex storage compartment sits inside the bed at the tailgate end, below where the cover seals. When you close a tonneau cover, it seals at the top of the tailgate in the normal position, and you reach the StowFlex by opening the tailgate the usual way.
A 5’2″ / 62″ cover. Every Gen 3 Colorado (2023–2026) runs the same 62″ bed across all trims, from WT to ZR2 Bison. The only real variable is making sure the cover is listed for the 2023+ generation and not the 2015–2022 platform, since the rail geometry differs even though the Gen 2 short bed was also 62″.
Answer the questions below and the cover type falls out. The full reasoning lives in our hard vs. soft tonneau cover guide. Here is the short version for Colorado owners.
| Question | If yes | Cover type |
|---|---|---|
| Do you carry tools or gear that can be stolen? | A hard lock matters | Hard folding or retractable |
| Do you open the bed every single day? | Easy access matters | Soft roll-up or retractable |
| Do you run accessories like bike racks or awnings? | Rail integration matters | RetraxPRO XR with Trax rails |
| Is budget the primary constraint? | Entry-level soft | Gator SFX or TruXedo Lo Pro |
| ZR2 Bison plus an overland build? | Capacity and accessory mount | RetraxPRO XR |
Most Colorado owners land on a soft cover or the BAKFlip. The retractable is the right answer for a narrower group: the ones building the truck into a platform.
Run this list before you order. Each box you can check is one less reason for a return.
For most Colorado owners, especially Gen 3 (2023+) daily drivers who want real cargo security without modifying the box, the BAKFlip MX4 (448146) is the cover we would buy with our own money. Five-year warranty, 400 lb capacity, and aluminum panels that look like they belong on the truck. If you open the bed constantly and want to mount accessories, step up to the RetraxPRO XR. If you mostly want weather cover at a low upfront cost, the TruXedo Lo Pro earns its spot on the daily-driver shortlist.
ZR2 and ZR2 Bison owners building toward a capable overland rig: the RetraxPRO XR plus Trax rail accessories turns your cover into a platform. It is a meaningful cost, but it replaces two separate purchases, the cover and the accessory rail, with one.
Whatever you choose, confirm the generation first. That single check prevents the most common Colorado cover return there is.
