Which cover works with which box
Cover behaviour depends on how the box mounts, not on your truck — but the length it leaves you is specific to the Ranger.
Crossover / saddle box
12–20"The classic box that sits across the bed on the rails, behind the cab.
Mounts on top of the bed rails and hangs into the bed. Because it sits ON the rails, it occupies the exact space a tonneau cover's front rail wants — this is the pairing that needs a purpose-made shorter cover.

Low-profile crossover
12–18"A crossover box shaped to sit below the rail line.
Sits low enough that a cover can often close over the top of it, which is the one case where you may not need a shortened cover at all — but the lid still has to clear, so measure the height from bed floor to rail top and compare it with the box.

Chest / trunk box
14–24"A box that sits on the bed floor against the bulkhead, below rail height.
Because it sits on the floor rather than on the rails, a full-length cover can usually close right over it — the trade is that it eats bed floor and you lose the space under the closed cover.

Side-mount / rail box
No length lostA long, narrow box that runs down one side of the bed along the rail.
Runs along the bed rather than across it, so it costs no bed length — but it sits exactly where a tonneau cover's side rails clamp. This is a width conflict, not a length one, and most covers cannot share the rail with it.

Wheel-well box
No length lostA wedge-shaped box that fills the space over a wheel arch.
Sits low over the wheel arch and costs no bed length. Almost any cover closes over it, provided the box is below rail height — measure it, because taller ones foul a folding cover's panels when they stack.

Can I fit a tonneau cover and a tool box on a Ranger?
Yes. The usual setup is a crossover box at the bulkhead with a shortened roll-up cover behind it. What changes is the length you order: on a 59.6 inch bed a typical crossover box leaves roughly 44 inches to cover. Buy for that number, not for the bed length on the brochure.
What size tonneau cover do I need on a Ranger with a tool box?
Bed length minus the box footprint. The table on this page runs that sum for every bed this truck is sold with and every box type, but measure your own box front to back before ordering — the spread between brands is wide enough to matter.
Which cover types work with a box on a Ranger?
Roll-up covers, soft and hard, are sold in shortened toolbox cuts and are the safest choice. Folding covers can work when the remaining length matches a size they are made in. Retractables generally cannot, because the canister needs the same bulkhead space as the box, and a hinged one-piece lid cannot work around a box at all.
Will the box scratch the cover, or the other way round?
They should not touch. A correctly sized cover ends before the box begins, and the gap is deliberate — it gives the box lid room to open. If your cover and box are in contact, one of the two is the wrong size for the bed.
