Dig into the numbers

Comparing trucks — frequently asked

How do I compare two trucks?

Pick two pickups above and the tool lines up their key specs side by side — class, generation, max towing and payload, horsepower and torque, bed sizes, cabs, drivetrains and starting price — and flags the stronger truck on each measurable spec. Numbers come from our truck database for the latest generation of each model.

Which is more important, towing or payload?

It depends on how you use the truck. Towing capacity matters if you pull trailers, boats or campers; payload is what you can carry in the bed and cab (people, cargo, plus the tongue weight of a trailer). A truck can have a high tow rating but run out of payload first — check both, and remember a tonneau cover and accessories eat into payload.

Are these the manufacturer's exact numbers?

They are representative maximums for each generation — the highest tow and payload figures, peak engine output and the starting price. Real numbers vary by cab, bed, engine, drivetrain and options, so always confirm the exact configuration on the door-jamb sticker and the build sheet before you buy or tow.
